NetBSD/macppc installation proccess

Hi Hello Hej

I've been reading the macppc docs a bit, and it has a part about tinkering with the BootROM, which I get stuck on, because every box I've re flashed have started to malfunction.
But when I was reading the Gentoo/ppc installation guide, it seems like they don't tell you to do it, maybe I've just missed that part. But can I install NetBSD/ppc and be as cool as the Japanese NetBSD/mac* user group people and still have a untouched BootROM?

I think I can manage to install NetBSD if I don't have to tinker with the BootROM, it could take some time but the beauti of NetBSD is that you learn a lot and you start to want to learn even more.

Ehm... anyway, this is my system details:
Apple (EVIL!) eMac 1GHz G4 (ATi)
OpenFirmware >3
ATi Radeon RV200 (supported by X.org! big_smile)

So... please tell me, OS X was a good idea until Apple began doing evil stuff to it.
Somehow I feel very limited using os x, I miss a super fast running Gimp, Inkscape and other goodies.

Take care and stay open source and happy.
And remember, it's not free like in free beer, it's free like in free speech.

Oh, btw, if you can't see the time when this was posted, it's late, so sorry for stupid things I might have said.

You don't have to tinker with the BootROM. You need to tinker with Open Firmware though, which is loaded by the BootROM.

See the "Preparing your Open Firmware 3 System for NetBSD" section in the NetBSD/macppc install documentation.

Re: NetBSD/macppc installation proccess

smile I had to read on many diffrent pages, but I did manage to install NetBSD on my eMac.
And I found out from an Apple Support page that my eMac didn't even had a newer Firmware update anyway.
So now I'll have to find out how to write docs and make a serius clean-up, by sending diffs

Re: NetBSD/macppc installation proccess

Cleanup? The BootROM section is fairly small and practically just says; install the most recent version. The BootROM install documentation should be included in the download or be available on Apples download site.

True. But I still think it's a good thing to make everything as clear as possible:)

Of course. I've been doing some documentation tasks myself (translations, et cetera), and if you'd like, I could review your work.

Re: NetBSD/macppc installation proccess

That would be wonderful:)
If I've understand things right, the manuals are in XML format and you send diff -un's to the netbsd-docs mail-list?
Well, I have to read more about it, for the moment I'm trying to get a working enviroment running on my workstation.
