problem with messagelogging

for some time everything int /var/log/ isn't anymore regulary compressed, and old messages aren't deleted. what can i do? now i have to delete /var/log/messges from time to time because otherwise it would exceed my hard disk space.

Re: problem with messagelogging

By default, "newsyslog" is run every hour from
root's crontab.

This handles the compression and cleanup
of /var/log/messages

Check that cron is running and that newsyslog
is properly scheduled in /var/cron/tabs/root

Re: problem with messagelogging

Yes, then it is run by midnight.

However, the default is every hour:
0 * * * * /usr/bin/newsyslog

Re: problem with messagelogging

Make sure that syslogd is running.

Edit /etc/syslog.conf

This is the default layout of syslog.conf:
http://cvsweb.se.netbsd.org/index.cgi/~ … xt%2Fplain
